Rules for Riders

Randonnees are structured rides with rules that are strictly enforced. All participants should take the time to review these regulations at Randonneurs USA. RUSA Rules

The following list summarizes these rules, however, if there is any discrepancy between these rules and those published by RUSA, the latter takes precedence.

  • Riders shall wear an approved (SNELL or ANSI) helmet at all times when riding.
  • Riders shall obey all rules of the road, and city, county and state laws on all roads traveled in the event.
  • Riders shall conduct themselves in a manner that does not bring discredit to the event, UltraMidwest, LLC or RUSA.
  • Riders are considered to be on a private excursion and are soley responsible for any accidents in which they are involved.
  • All human powered conveyences (bicycles, tandem, recumbents, HPV's, handcycles, etc.) can be used in a brevet, as long as they are powered strictly by the rider(s).
  • Each rider shall be self-sufficient. No personal support vehicles are allowed on the course. Personal support is allowed only at controls. Violations of this rule will result in immediate disqualification.
  • The prescribed arrival time at controls is absolute and is measured from the official start time.
  • Any rider leaving the official route for any reason must re-enter the route at the same point.
  • Riding after dark: Any rider riding after dark shall be equipped with at least two lights; a clear headlight and red tail light (non-flashing). Lights shall be secured to the bike frame and be visible to a distance of 500 feet. In addition, a two inch rear reflector is required. Riders shallwear a reflective vest and ankle straps. Additional lights, reflective tape and pedal reflectors are advised but not required. Riding after sunset without adequate lighting is cause for immediate disqualification.
  • Overall time limits vary for each brevet according to the distance.  (HH:MM)
  •       13:30 for 200 KM
  •       20:00 for 300 KM
  •       27:00 for 400 KM
  •       40:00 for 600 KM
  •       75:00 for 1000 KM
  • Riders must arrive at each checkpoint between the opening and closing time for the checkpoint. These times are noted on the brevet card with the information for the checkpoints.
  • All riders shall submit their bicycle for  inspection before the brevet, however the organizer is not obliged to inspect every bike and riders are not penalized if their cycle is not inspected. Refusal to allow inspections is cause for disqualification. The inspection is for required safety items only and the inspector bears no liability for mechanical failures that may occur at any point in the ride.
  • Inquiries, pleas, disagreements or grievances should be addressed to the IR officials. If the issue is not resolved to the rider’s satisfaction, it may be referred to the Randonneurs USA Board of Directors. A decision by the RUSA Board is final and binding.
