Bill is a cyclist who doesn't let problems get him down. Second only to Jeff Pierce in lifetime mileage on the Big Dogs site, Bill has been keeping logs of his miles since 1975. His total mileage in that time is over 360,000 miles! Bill spends winters in Texas and summers in his old stomping grounds around Frankfort, Illinois. He is one of the founding members of the Joliet Bike Club and was a LAW/LAB safe cycling instructor and mentored the Joliet Police Department when they started Policing on Bicycles. Although Bill has ridden all over the US and the world, he insists that the best cycling is in the midwest - and Illinois in particular! |
|
In 2006, shortly after planning, mapping and riding the Joliet clubs week-long Around Illinois Back Roads ride, Bill entered the hospital where he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. Statistically, persons inflicted with this disease survive 18 months - Bill has made it three and a half years! He has had 7 surgeries, a pacemaker and now rides a recumbent because his back has been weakened by the cancer and is not strong enough to support his wieght. |

Over the years, Bill has raised four children - and spent hours in court adopting two Korean and two American kids. "My expiration date is April 15. I scoff my doctor about saying that until about a week ago I either cracked or broke a few ribs. No falls or anything, just the cancer eating away. ~ Cycling is an individual sport. It can adjust to our needs. I hope for the best for you. I think our cycling allows us to endure what we have been through, and, the scary part, what we face." |
