About the Big Dogs!
|
The Big Dogs began in at the end of the 20th century when a group of long distance
cyclists from eastern Iowa and western Illinois decided to propose a challenge to
other cyclists in the area - to ride at least one one hundred mile ride for every
month of the upcoming year. Since the challenge would begin with the new year -
2000 - it was called the Big Dogs Millennium Challenge!
In the year 2000, fourteen cyclists completed the challenge, and it looks like there
will be over twenty riders completing the challenge in 2001. This is the sort of
challenge that newcomers and veteran cyclists can enjoy together.
In 2001, the Quad City Big Dogs were joined by a group of riders in the central
Iowa area and a contingency from Kentucky - fondly known as the Mad Dogs. Ride reports
from the various rides were posted at the Big Dog's Doghouse Forum, and several
joint rides have come about as a result of the Challenge.
In 2001 the Big Dogs started the Big Dogs Triple Crown Challenge. Based on the California
Triple Crown, the BDTC required riders to complete a minimum of three of a series
of double centuries to finish the challenge. In 2001 12 riders completed the Triple
Crown.
The Big Dogs ranks have included many elite riders; Tom Buckley,
Scott Dixon, Lisa Paulos, Larry Ide, Dennis Grelk, Larry Schwartz and Merry Vander
Linden have all taken part in the adventure over the years!
In 2005, Joe Jamison and Dave Parker (the owner and webmaster of the Big Dogs
website) created UltraMidwest, LLC - a small company dedicated to producing a few
long distance competitions. The Big Dogs website was, at that time, rolled into
the LLC - in order to better handle the finances of the site. However, the
Big Dogs are still the riders...you!
Over the years a lot of riders have completed at least one full year of rides and
there are still a few that have not missed a month since the beginning of the 21st
Century!
Register and join the fun!
