GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL 6, 12 AND 24 HOUR RACES
"Ride safely and don't cheat." ~ Lon Haldeman |
|
- Start Time: There will be a mass start for all racers at 6:30AM the
morning of the event. 24 hour racers will group at the head of the field. Behind
them, will be the 6 and 12 hour racers.
- Pre-race meeting: Held 15 minutes before starting time. Attendance is
required.
- Helmets: Riders shall wear an approved (SNELL or ANSI or similar
certifier) helmet at all times when riding. Chin strap must be fastened at all
time when riding.
- Rules of the Road: Riders shall obey all rules of the road, and city, county and state laws on all
roads traveled in the event. Generally, this means riding single file to the right side of the road, obeying traffic signs,
stopping at controlled intersections and following directives of all law enforcement officers.
Penalties will be levied against riders for infractions.
- Going off course: All loops are marked and queue sheets provided to each
rider. Although every effort is made to ensure that the route markings are
accurate prior to the race, no allowances will be made if a rider goes off
course. This rule applies whether or not the error is due to rider error
(missing a turn) or because of external circumstances (unknown parties tampering
with the road markings). Riders should consider the queue sheet as the primary
source of truth for questions about the routes.
- Inspection: All 24 hour riders shall submit their bicycle for inspection before the
event,
however the organizer is not obliged to inspect every bike and riders are not
penalized if their cycle is not inspected. Refusal to allow inspections is cause
for disqualification. The inspection is for required safety items only and the
inspector bears no liability for mechanical failures that may occur at any point
in the ride.
- Support Vehicles: Riders shall not be supported by a vehicle on the
medium or short loops. Support vehicles are allowed on the long loop, but may
not follow their rider. Vehicles must stop and park completely off the roadway
with emergency flashers on to assist or provide handups to riders. Vehicles must
not impede the normal flow of traffic by driving at the bicyclists speed, unless
the safety of the rider requires it.
- Lap counting/Timing: Because of the complexity of timing three events
simultaneously, participants must give timekeepers the opportunity to properly
identify them with each lap and at all checkpoints. Riders must slow down and in
many cases stop to ensure the timekeepers keep an accurate lap count. To allow
each rider opportunity to accumulate their maximum mileage, any rider who arrives at the
start/finish before the end of their event but without adequate time to complete a final lap
will be allowed to ride a partial lap. The distance awarded to the rider for the partial lap
will be calculated by taking the riders average speed (miles per minute) for the lap prior to the partial lap
times the number of minutes from the start of the partial lap to the end of the official race time.
- Passing: This section applies to all riders; time trial riders must also
note additional rules in the 24 hour section. Passing must be done on the left
when there is adequate open road to do so safely. Do not pass in traffic or when
doing so would crowd the overtaken rider. Ride safely!
- UMCA Membership: For insurance purposes, all riders must be members of the UMCA (UltraMarathon Cycling
Association). If you are not a member, one day licenses are available for $10.00.
($12.00 non-US Citizens)
- DNF (Abandoning): Riders that abandon the race shall promptly inform an official that
they have dropped out.
- Timestation zone: No riders shall stop or recieve hand-ups after the
final turn in the parking lot, or in the area between the timestation and the
water stop after the time station. Riders with support crews on the right side
of the parking lot in this area may stop as long as they are clear of incoming
riders. See the
Parking/Timing Zone
Parking/Timing Zone diagram.
