Route and Rules
The Metamora route starts at Black Partridge Park on Coal Bank Road just outside Metamora,IL. The route is generally on flat and straight country roads. There is very little elevation gain in terms of single climbs. Aside from one rather noticable climb out of a small creek bed at the beginning of the loop, this route consists of a few rolling hills and a lot of flat blacktop.
There is one rest stop approximately half way around the loop - in front of a church. This location has turned out to be an excellent rest stop for many of the riders in previous races. There are no rest rooms at this stop, so plan accordingly! As you can see from the topo graph below, the elevation for the entire event is within a 200 foot span.

RULES

  • Registration cutoff: No registrations on the day of the race! Although we will register riders until 8 PM the Friday before the event, we highly recommend pre-registering. This makes the whole event go smoother for everyone involved -- especially us!
  • T-shirts: Please note that we price event T-shirts separately from the event fees in order to keep costs down for those that don't want souvenier shirts - we order only as many as you order, so our supply at the event is limited! If you want one order it when you register.
  • Start Time: The race will start promptly at 6:00 AM on 8 August 2009. All riders must sign a waiver which will be available upon check in Friday night or at Black Partridge Park the morning of the race, from 5:15-5:45 AM.
  • Drafting: Drafting is allowed.
  • Rules of the Road: Riders must obey all traffic signs and signals and the orders of any city, county or state law enforcement officials. There are a few points in the route where riders must cross highways. Riders must stop at these intersections or they will be penalized.
  • Support Vehicles and handups: Support vehicles may not follow their riders on the course. They can provide handups and support at the start/finish and the 25 mile rest stop only. A separate route to and from the start to the finish will be provided to support vehicles. Many of the roads on the route are narrow, with limited visibility and no shoulders, and we feel that allowing vehicles to follow riders at a slow pace, or to stop along the road to hand off supplies is not a safe practice. 25 miles between support stations should be adequate for all riders. The only exception is that support vehicles are allowed to assist any rider with injuries or mechanical problems. If this should occur, the support vehicle must be positioned as far off the road as safely possible, and have their emergency flashers on.
  • Equipment: Helmets are required. Although we assume that all riders will have adequate time to finish their ride before dark, anyone finishing after dark must have adequate lighting -- reflectors, head and tail lights -- in order to continue. The route this year will go through the business district of Metamora and proper equipment is necessary.
  •
  • Lap Counting: Riders must call out their number at the park entrance every lap. It is the rider's responsibility to confirm that the timer heard them. Do not assume otherwise. It is not necessary to check in at the rest stop.
  • UMCA Membership: For insurance purposes, all riders must be members of the UMCA (UltraMarathon Cycling Association). If you are not a member, one day licenses are available for $10.00. ($12.00 non-US Citizens)
